11,957. Parfitt, W. E. May 21. Tread bands, projections, and surfaces.-- Elastic tyres are protected by curved plates, secured separately to the rim by inclined pivoted links. In the form shown in Fig. 1, each of the plates G, which may be faced with wood or fibre, is pivoted upon a transverse bolt F to two links E pivoted upon a bolt D carried by the rim flanges B. A heel I is formed upon each link to limit its outward motion. The tyre H may be sectional and of solid india-rubber with a flat tread as shown, or may be formed of conical spiral springs. In the form shown in Fig. 2; a pneumatic tyre H held in a rim N is protected by shields consisting of two side-strips K, carrying studded or roughened arched steel strips J, and formed with studs L pivoted by links E to bolts passing through the felloe. The shields of Fig. 2 may be applied to a circular solid india-rubber tyre, and the plates of Fig. 1 applied to a pneumatic tyre, in which case they are curved and the links attached as in Fig. 2.
