Abstract

8118. Dunne, J. W. April 5. Aerial machines without a e r o s t a t s ; planes, construction and arrangement of.-The supporting- planes comprise two rearwardly extending rigid wings so formed that the angle of incidence decreases continuously and in some cases changes sign in passing from the centre to the tips, the upper surfaces being parts of one or more cones or cylinders. Figs. 1 and 2 show the derivation of such a surface ACDB of parallelogram shape from a cone. The wing adjoins the body 1, Fig. 13, of the machine along the line AB, being attached by means of booms 11, suitably braced. Crossribs 12, curved to the wing surface, are fitted to preserve its shape. In modifications, the apex of the cone is placed in front of, instead of behind, the wing, or the surface is derived from two cones, from a cone and cylinder, or from a single cylinder, and triangular or other shapes may replace the parallelogram. Aerial machines adapted to travel on land.-A central skid 6 attached to the body 1 carries a pair of wheels 9 connected to the sides of the body by forked members 10. Propelling.-Two propellers 2 carried by a frame 29 are driven from the shaft 28 of a motor 27 the position of which can be adjusted by extending the shaft and altering the position of the driving-wheel on the shaft. S t e e r i n g by means similar to that described in Speci6cation 1469/70. Horizontal flaps 23 are pivoted to the outer rear edges of the wings and are operated by means of wires 25, 26.
