Sliding sashes in one plane.-Windows having upper and lower sashes in the same plane, and provided with hinged stop-. beads so that the sashes may be removed, are fitted with hinged sill beads h which, when closed, fit between the stop-beads t and lock them in the closed d position. The upper sash a is balanced by weights in the ordinary manner, and, when slid up into the space d in the head so as to disengage a tongue-and-groove joint c at the meeting rails of the sashes, the lower sash may be completely removed from the frame. In a modification, the lower sash may be hinged to the frame as a single or double casement ; or the lower sash may be arranged to slide down below the sill, and the upper sash to slide up beyond the head of the frame.
