Abstract

5642. Phillips, W. March 9. Casement ; sliding sashes in one plane.-An outwardly - opening casement and an horizontallysliding sash are mounted in the same plane in a window frame, so that when the casement is opened the outer glass surfaces of both may be easily cleaned from the inside. The casement c is fitted with socket plates j engaging pins i on the frame and is provided with a groove m<1> on the meeting stile engaging a tongue m on the meeting stile of the sliding sash b, the other stile of which is grooved at n<1> to engage a tongue n on the frame. Both parts of the window are secured in the closed position by a single fastener y. A tongue o extends the whole length of the sill and a rabbet q is cut in the cross-bar C over the sliding sash, and the under face of the cross-bar over the casement is made flush with the bottom of the rabbet q, the casement rails being rabbeted to clear the tongue o on the sill and a tongue r which may be provided on the cross-bar in the casement half of the frame. The casement may be held open in any position by a catch which engages notches in a semicircular bar s on the frame. The window may be provided with a fixed sash on either side in addition to the sliding sash and casement.
