Abstract

21,959. Moscicki, I. Oct. 17, 1907, [date applied for under Section 91 of Patents &c. Act, 1907]. Nitrogen oxides.-In the production of oxides of nitrogen by rotary-flame arcs, short - circuiting across the shortest path between the electrodes is prevented, and the effective voltage of the flame is increased, by conducting gases or vapours not taking part in the reaction on to that side of the flame on which the reaction gases are situated after passage through the arc. The arc is struck between electrodes a, b, and is rotated in proximity to the flat electrode b by the magnetic field produced by the pole-pieces c, d. The electrode b is separated by an insulator k, and both electrodes are arranged for water-cooling. The reaction gases enter by a passage i, are guided to the flame by a deflector r, pass through the arc, and are led off through passages l in the electrode b. The auxiliary gases enter by a passage h in the electrode a, and spread out the flame in the form of a cone, spreading being assisted by a deflector on the electrode b immediately below the passage h. The pole-pieces are insulated by non-conducting strips s. The auxiliary gases may be such as are easily separated from the reaction gases, for example aqueous vapour, or gases previously enriched with oxides of nitrogen, or such as would have to be added to the reaction gases. Or gases similar to the reaction gases may be used, and these can be drawn off separately, a portion being added to the reaction gases from time to time.
