Abstract
In a method of spraying metal by means of a metal spray pistol operating by combustion of gases, a principal electric field is generated by a potential between the point of a wire of the spraying metal and the surface to be sprayed and a second field, preferably provided by a high voltage high frequency alternating current circuit, is superimposed on the principal field. The circuit of the superimposed field may be connected between the wire point and an electrode such as an annular electrode or one or more metal points between the wire and the surface. Electron emission due to heat and ionization may be increased by providing electron-emitting substances in a core or coating of the wire, in the combustion gases or on the gun itself, or ionizing light such as ultra-violet may be used to irradiate the gases. Alloying, or deoxidant substances such as ferro-titanium or ferro-aluminium may be included in the metal wire.
