The luffing- drum e<1> is driven from the shaft f<1> through a sliding clutch and toothed gearing e, f. When the clutch is out of gear, the drum is locked by a pawl b prevented from disengagement by a rod g, which rests on the collar h of the clutch. When the clutch is put in gear the collar slides from under the rod g and the latter drops, lifting the pawl clear of the wheel e. The clutch cannot be disengaged until the rod g has been raised above the collar h., thus putting the pawl i n t o engagement with the wheel e.
