Abstract

15,924. Clarke, T. W. K. July 27. Aerial machines without aerostats; aeroplanes; framework ; steering.-In an aerial machine having front and rear supporting- surfaces, one of the planes, preferably the front and smaller one, is arranged to be moved about both transverse and longitudinal axes for steering and balancing, and also, if desired, about a vertical axis. The forward plane a is moved by a steering- rod f, which passes through a bearing f<3> pivoted at f<1> on a vertical pivot a'. A cord g<1> is attached at its ends to the extremities of the plane a, or to the frame of the machine, and passes round guide-pulleys g<2> and the pulley g fixed on the rodf. By raising or lowering the rod f the plane a is rotated about its transverse axis ; by rotating the rod, the plane is tilted about its longitudinal axis ; while by moving the rod to the right or left the plane is moved about the vertical pivot a'. In order to allow the plane b to yield on meeting an obstruction, it is secured to a bridle h<1> and held down on the frame c by a spring h<2>. The forward edge of the plane abuts against stops h fixed to the upper edge of the framework.
