Abstract
8. Ocumpaugh, C. H. Jan. 1. Aerial machines without aerostats; planes, construction of; steering.-The aeroplane consists of two side frames, shaped as shown in Fig. 2, connected together by transverse rods and carrying the main planes 10, 11, the steering and balancing planes, and the motor and propeller. A balancing- plane 20 is arranged above and parallel to the upper main plane. to which it is linked, and the tapered rear portion projects beyond the main plane. The plane 20 is moved sideways by cords 29, 30, whereby its area, projecting at one or other side of the longitudinal axis of the machine may be increased or diminished. The cords 29, 30 may be extended rearwardly and connected to two rudders 26, which are universally connected at 26<i> to the frame and slidably connected to it at 26<1>. The rudders are interconnected by a rod 26<a> and are warped simultaneously with the operation of the plane 20. The elevator 19 is hinged to a crossbar 14 and is controlled by cables. The elevator may consist of a wedge-shaped plane having its angle towards the front of the machine.
