Abstract

Aerial machines without aerostats; planes, arrangement of; propelling.-The machine is provided with one or more pairs of flapping wings A operated by cranks B, connecting-rods D and arms C fixed to the wings. In the construction shown, there are three pairs of wings, the front and rear pair being smaller than, and working in opposite phase to, the middle pair. In case of break down of the engine, the wings can by means of a handwheel be brought into position to act as fixed supporting-planes to effect a descent. Steering.-A head H', comprising horizontal and vertical surfaces fixed together and a horizontal tail T' are provided. The head is capable of lateral movement about a vertical pivot I on a frame which is hinged at G to the machine frame for vertical movement. The tail can be given a vertical movement about hinges N and a movement about a longitudinal pivot O, as seen in Fig. 4. The head and tail are simultaneously actuated in the vertical direction by the similar movement of a rod Q connected to the rods Y, Z. Lateral movement of the head is effected by twisting the rod Q, which rotates the cross-bar K to which the rods Y are connected. To turn the tail about the pivot O, the rod Z which has a swivel joint at M is turned by a cross-rod R<1> and chain R.
