Abstract

25,726. Paget, Sir R. A. S. Nov. 8. Steering and balancing, band-levers for. The hand-levers A are provided with adjustable armrests B, and are connected to the ends of a curved bar C, which passes under the seat of the operator, and is pivoted at D to a second curved bar E. The bar E is mounted to move about a vertical pivot F which is mounted on a sleeve G rotatable about a longitudinal pivot H. The bar E is connected at the points I to the rudder, so that this is operated by moving the bar about its vertical pivot F. The sleeve G is provided with an arm K connected to the lateral balancing - members. The lower end L of the bar C is connected to the elevator. One of the pivots F, H may be suppressed if it is desired to actuate the rudder or balancing- members independently, as by a foot-lever. The steering-head may comprise a transverse bar with handles and arm-rests instead of the bar passing under the seat of the operator. The connexions between the steering-head and the planes are arranged to obtain mimetic or instinctive control. According to one method, the connexions are arranged so that the steering-head is moved by the operator in the direction in which the machine is desired to move. In another arrangement, the steering-head is considered as an abutment, by reaction against which the rider pushes himself in the direction in which the machine should move to regain stability. In the second method the connexions are the reverse of those of the first method.
