Abstract
25,468. Vickers, Ltd., and Low, A. R. Nov. 15. Planes, arrangement of; steering.-The main planes of an aerial machine are universally jointed to a frame which is vertically adjustable on the fuselage in order that the planes may be swung over the fuselage for transport purposes. The planes may be manually turned about their transverse axes in similar or opposite senses. The wing-carrying frame C is carried by clamps L from the fuselage B' and is adapted to swing about an axis C<2> carried by the top bar B<2> of the fuselage by means of the reciprocation of a rod K connected to a shaft E on the frame C. This movement causes the planes to be similarly turned. The shaft E carries two cross-bars f, f' connected by open and crossed wires f<Î>, f<1Î> respectively to cross-bars a, a<1> on the mainplane spars so that, when the shaft E is rotated by a wheel H, cords g<Î>, and cranks g, g<1>, the planes are oppositely turned. The planes are mounted on the main spars through ball bearings and are horizontally pivoted at d<2> to sleeves d surrounding vertical pivots d' carried by the clamps L. The supporting-wires M are secured to swivelling parts M<3> and to rings M' freely mounted on the spars so that turning of the planes does not affect the wires. To fold the planes over the fuselage the clamps L are released and the frame C is raised. The planes are turned about the pivots d' after the wires f<Î>, f<1Î> and the rod K are detached.
