Charging. - In refuse - consuming and other furnaces the lid or cover for the charging-opening is suspended from the wheels of a trolly, so that when the latter is moved the lid is lifted and carried away from the charging - opening. In the arrangement shown the lid H is suspended from supports J fixed on the inner sides of the wheels F of a trolly D running on rails E. The trolly carries a plate M, which closes the shoot C when the lid is in position, and a hopper L, which directs the materials into the charging-opening B when the lid has been removed. A plate N, pivoted to the shoot, forms one side of the hopper, and movement of this plate when in its operative position is prevented by an arm P, which engages a rail fixed above the hopper. The wheels and rails may be toothed as indicated, and the lid may be suspended from the wheels by links.
