Sawing.-In a machine of the type comprising a supporting-frame secured to the floor and adjacent wall and a head in which are mounted two spindles, one carrying a circular saw and the other a gearwheel which engages with a pinion on the tool spindle, the gear is driven by a pedal arrangement through a free-wheel clutch, the driving-mechanism being concealed within the supporting- pillar, or directly by a belt on its periphery. The tool is mounted on a spindle g, Fig. 2, carried by a head f, which is supported by a standard a. The head also carries a spindle h, on which is mounted an internally toothed gear wheel l, which engages a pinion k on the spindle g. The wheel l is provided with a broad flange so that it may be used as a belt pulley. A sprocket wheel p is also mounted on the shaft h and is clutched to a boss m on the wheel l by a free - wheel clutch. The sprocket wheel p is driven by a metal strip 3 concealed in the standard, and wrapped round d a pulley on a sleeve 5 on the spindle h. The strip is operated by a pedal and controlled by a spring 6. The pulley sleeve 5 is notched as at 8 to allow, the free-wheel mechanism to be readily removed. A work support having two faces is adjustably mounted in the head. The head f may be made in two pieces secured together by bolts to facilitate cleaning.
