Abstract

788,807. Belt gearing. NEW BRITAIN MACHINE CO. May 10, 1955, No. 13559/55. Class 80 ( 1 ). In a belt drive for the tool spindle 20 of a combined horizontal boring, drilling and milling machine the outer surface of the belt 39, Fig. 3, is cogged and is wrapped around and held in contact with toothed grooves in the driving and driven pulleys 38, 40 by idler guide rollers 46, 45, 47 and return rollers 48, 49. The location of the belt within the spindlehead C minimizes the overhang of the spindle 20, while the utilization of the outer surface of the belt enables it to be replaced without disturbing the spindle bearings. Preferably the pulley grooves are of the same depth as the belt thickness and the rollers 46, 45, 47 so positioned that they roll on the peripheries of the pulleys 38, 40. The rollers 47, 48 are supported in a yoke pivoting on a pin 70 coaxial with the roller 47, and the yoke is supported in a casing 63 by a screw 74 whereby the belt tension may be adjusted. The roller 49 is located between a shoulder and a snap-ring on a headed shaft 53 passing through the spindle-head housing wall 22 and held in a rib 54 by a snap ring. The rollers 46, 45 are supported by means similar to that for the roller 49. To facilitate installing a new belt the casing 63 and yoke therein are removed, and the roller shafts are shifted to allow the belt to be looped around the rollers. The driven pulley 40 is mounted on a spindle quill 23, Fig. 2, in which the tool spindle 20 is slidably keyed, the spindle being axially fed by mechanism not shown. The shaft of the driving pulley 38 carries a pinion 36 engageable by a gear pair 30-31 slidable on a shaft 32 which is driven through bevel gearing by a spline shaft 35 itself driven by a motor and change-speed gearing (not shown). Gears 27, 28 may be provided on the quill 23 and be engageable by the gear pair 30-31 to transmit low-speed drives independently of the belt gearing. It is stated that in other belt drives the externally-cogged belt may be replaced by a belt provided on its inner surface with interlocking means, such a belt being held in engagement with a pulley by idler means engaging its outer surface.
