Electromagnets.-In a lifting-magnet for use with loads of different shapes or with uneven surfaces, one or more pole-pieces are arranged to move relatively to the magnet for adjustment to the load and are connected with the magnet by means of the lifting tackle. Fig. 3 shows a magnet having movable pole-pieces E sliding between guides D and the fixed pole-pieces C. Jaws F of members G pivoted to a bracket H mounted on the magnet and connected at their inner ends to the lifting chair serve to clamp the movable pole-pieces E. In a modification, the magnet is cylindrical and the movable pole-piece is in the form of a tube, which may be split. Fig. 5 shows a flexible coupling consisting of a bracket Q, rope, R, and pulleys S, T connecting the movable pole-pieces N, P.
