Hooks on which clothes, towels, &c. can be hung are so attached to the top of the cupboard or other piece of furniture that they can be placed out of sight when not in use. The hook 1, Fig. 1, is hinged to a plate 2 so as to fold back. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the book is pivoted to a plate 3 and is provided with a stud or the like 4 adapted to engage the holes 5 so that the hook need only be slightly raised in order to turn it from one position to the other. In a further modification, the hook is guided between rails on the plate, and is provided with a shoulder to prevent it from being drawn out too far and with a stud similar to the stud 4 to hold it in position. Fig. 8 shows a number of hooks connected by levers 9 to a sliding rod 10 of square section guided in eyes fixed to the plate 14. To lock the books in the position shown, a cylindrical rod 11, Fig. 9, inserted in the hollow end of the rod 10, is turned so as to bring the pin 12 into engagement with an opening 15 in the plate 14. Several of the hooks shown in Fig. 1 can be connected to a common axis, so as to be collectively turned by a crank or the like.
