8571. Politz, G. July 18, 1906, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-The tubes of condensers, feedwater-heaters, &c. are packed in the tube-plates by circular, elliptical, or polygonal rings c of india-rubber or other elastic material held in slightly conical recesses in the plates by the excess pressure on the outer side of the plate. The bottom of each recess may be conical as shown or flat. As the tube b moves through the plate owing to expansion and contraction or otherwise, the ring c rolls on the tube and wall of the recess and maintains a tight joint.
