The exhaust gases, after passing the exhaust valve, escape through two or more outlets, which communicate separately with the silencer. Fig. 1 shows an arrangement with a water - jacketed exhaust valve chamber having two outlets b, supplementary silencers c, and a main silencer d. The latter is constructed of two co-axial tubes, one pierced at the middle and the other near the ends. The supplementary silencers are constructed of three co-axial tubes, the two inner ones divided by a partition f. The gases flow through the chambers so formed as shown by the arrows. In a modified construction, the outlets a pass through the sides of the valve chamber.
