Abstract

29,342. Hetherington & Sons, J., and Snape, T. H. Dec. 24. Carding-engines.-The object is to prevent the front cover of the main cylinder from being opened before the main-cylinder has come to a dead stop, and to prevent the belt from being moved on to the fast pulley to start the carding-engine until the cover is closed. The opening of the cover 2 operates an axially-movable stud 13 by means of a lever 4, slide bar 7, and lever 12. The stud is mounted opposite to a hole in the side of a band-pulley 15 which is combined with the ordinary fast pulley 16, and can only move axially hence the cover can only be opened when the band pulley is at rest to receive the stud. An arm 18 fixed to the beltfork shaft 9 engages a projection 19 on the slide bar 7, and prevents the opening of the cover while the driving-belt is on the fast pulley, and the projection 19, by impeding the arm 18, prevents the belt from being shifted on to the fast pulley when the cover is open. The axial movement of the stud may be effected by a pin 20, Fig. 2, fixed in the sleeve 14 and engaging a screw-thread oh the stud, or by a rack and pinion, or a wedge ; the stud-and-hole lock may be replaced by a catch and teeth, or notches, or other suitable device. The bar 7 is constructed in two parts held together by a spring bolt 21. When it is desired to rotate the main cylinder by hand for grinding purposes, the two parts of the slide bar 7 are disconnected so that its ends may be operated separately.
