Abstract
29,203. Church, B. S. Dec. 21. Elastic-fluid turbines.-An elastic-fluid turbine which may be adapted for use as a compressor or the like is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The turbine wheel G<1> has a ring of blades V on each side co-operating with nozzle rings R<1>, R<2>. The steam inlet H opens into a channel K connected to guide - channels formed on both sides of the casing and leading the steam to the nozzle rings on both sides of the wheel. The casing has guide - channels g and nozzle channels y<1> arranged in two semicircular sets on both sides of the wheel and leading the steam in a serpentine course from the inlet H to the exhaust J and causing it to impact repeatedly on the wheel. The nozzles and guide-channels increase in size from the inlet to the exhaust and are proportioned so that the steam issues from all the nozzles at a uniform speed. The guide channels g at their peripheral portions like the channel K are open from end to end so that any inequalities of pressure between the two sides of the wheel are neutralized. A modification has two rows of blades on each side of the wheel and two rows of guide-blades, the nozzles being proportioned to deliver jets proportionate to the velocities of the blades. The turbine may be adapted for running at half-load by making the two sides of the wheel independent by extending the partition f, and it may be adapted for use as a reversible marine turbine by arranging the two halves for forward and reversed running respectively.
