Abstract

27,324. Cooper, A. J. Dec. 15. Impact-wheels.-The drum a is mounted upon a abaft i running in bearings j, Fig. 1, and has upon its periphery vanes or blades b which project from it at an angle less-preferably considerably lessthan a right-angle, Fig. 2. An important feature is the curvature of the blades b, which form the conduits c, both in an axial and a circumferential direction. The conduits and blades are very shallow at the centre of the drum, and increase in depth towards the ends as shown in Fig. 1. Two tangential entrance nozzles p are fitted, one at the top and the other at the bottom of the drum o, and exhaust passages q are provided at each end as shown. Inlet orifices p may be provided on each side of the centre, instead of one orifice at the centre. The end chambers r may be connected to a condenser or with a second turbine, and instead of the arrangement shown steam may be admitted at the ends, exhausted towards the centre into an inner set of conduits, and discharged at the ends r. Instead of duplicate sets of blades, a single set may be employed.
