Abstract
19,116. Wasley, T. J. J. Aug. 27. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Reaction-wheels.-Relates to reactionwheels in which the reaction nozzles are formed in the rim of a drum-shaped wheel. The wheel C, Figs. 1 and 2, has a smooth rim B, in which are formed tangential nozzles passages H adapted to direct jets of steam or other driving-fluid nn to blades I fixed to the casing. The driving-fluid is introduced into the hollow trunnions B<2> of the wheel or through the hollow shaft. A modification, which is reversible, has a rim B, Fig. 5, with radial passages adapted to aline with oppositely inclined passages H, H<1> formed in a shrunk-on ring B<20>. A ring-valve J is arranged inside the wheel and has ports H', which can be brought opposite either set of nozzle passages as required. The valve may be operated by an external brake device which temporarily retards its rotation relatively to that of The wheel. A similar governor-operated valve may be fitted to a non-reversible wheel. The stator blades I', Fig. 8, may be projecting ribs or saw-like teeth and may be provided with apertures i. For low speeds, the nozzle passages are formed as capillary jet holes.
