Abstract

5759. Cowan, J., and Baillie, R. March 9. Feed - water, heating ; superheaters, steam. - Installations for generating steam are fitted with a feed-heater and a superheater, the feed-heater being worked at a pressure greater than that in the boilers ; the steam generated in the feed-heater is passed into the superheater with the steam from the boilers. The Figure shows a feed-heater and a superheater arranged in the form of a five-drum Stirling boiler. The feed - heater, formed by the upper drum a, tubes c, and lower drum b, is arranged as a screen to the superheater, which is formed by the remaining tubes and drums. The feed is supplied to the lower drum b from an elevated hotwell or tank l by an injector m, which is worked by steam from the drum a or by superheated steam. In some cases, the drum a may be divided into two compartments and the feed-water introduced to one of them. A pipe j connects the steam space of the drum a with the rear drum e of the superheater ; a reducing-valve may be fitted in this pipe. The pipe leading from the boilers is shown at k. The hot water is supplied automatically to the boilers by the difference of pressure, the delivery being controlled by floats in the usual manner. If desired, the feedheater may be worked at the same pressure as the boiler but placed at a higher level. Flooding- connexions are provided to enable the whole apparatus to work as a boiler in the ordinary way.
