Generating by indirect contact of heated gases; pressure, regulating.-Coal is distilled in the presence of steam which is supplied from a generator with a water supply under a head free to rise and fall so that the height of the head regulates the pressure of the steam, and generation of steam ceases when the pressure is sufficient to drive the water out of the generator. The steamgenerator may be heated by the hot gases formed in the retorts and may be fed 'by a feed-water heater similarly heated. Steam is admitted to the retorts at J<2> by means of a pipe J and conduits J<1>, in which the steam is superheated before passing to the retorts. The pipe J leads from a generator G<1> of the tubular type heated by the hot gases from the retorts which are led from a cylindrical receiver connected to each retort by a conduit F<1> by means of a conduit G, and, after passing through the generator, the gases are led by a conduit G<2> to condensers &c. The boiler G<1> is fed by a feed-water heater H' also connected to the gas receiver F, and the heater H<1> is supplied from a tank H<4> and pipe H<3> so arranged that the head of water in the tank H<4> depends on the steam pressure, and if this becomes excessive all the water is driven from the generator G<1>. The head of water may also be produced by arranging the heater H<1> above the generator G<1>, and providing water-supplying means for the heater. More than one cylindrical receiver as F may be provided for a set of retorts, if desired.
