Abstract

7813. Clark, A. M., [Taylor Steam Economist Co.]. April 16. Feedwater, heating and purifying.- Relates to apparatus for condensing exhaust steam and thereby heating feedwater for the boiler and air for the furnace. The water of condensation, freed from grease &c., is also used as feed. The exhaust steam is passed through a chamber A, Fig. 2, with water heating and settling chambers B above and a feedtank C below. The chamber A is divided by baffleplates forming a tortuous passage, and is traversed by coils of air pipes F through which air is forced on its way to the furnace. Exhaust steam may be mixed with the air. Water of condensation passes to a separator K, from which grease &c. rising to the surface is drawn off. The purified water passes into the tank C, whence it is taken by the feedpump. Heated and purified water from the chambers B is also led into the separator. The supply of water to the chambers B, which are in communication one with another, is controlled by a float in the separator K. Fig. 4 shows a supplementary condenser composed of radiating tubes S, S' and connecting-tubes S<3>, which rotates in the socket D' by the reaction of jets of steam escaping from nozzles U, U. Water of condensation is withdrawn into the vessel X.
