Abstract

13,320. Truss, T. F. J. June 28. Vertical, multitubular, and return-flue boilers ; feed-water, supplying ; joints.-A generator is heated by fire-tubes placed immediately below the water level. The feed-water enters at the bottom in such a manner as to prevent disturbance of the water in the boiler. In the boiler shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the spiral tubes A<8> carry the hot gases from the burners A<5> to the central uptake A<6>. The products o f combustion may be returned to the burners, where they are drawn in and circulated again by the incoming gas. The feed-water upon entering impinges against a conical baffle A<12> supported by a hood A<13>. The uptake may be formed as shown in Fig. 4 so as to facilitate connexion with the tubes. In Figs. 5 and 6, U-shaped tubes D are shown applied to a cylindrical boiler. The burners D<3>, D', D<6> project into the flared ends of the tubes, the other ends of which are connected by beads D<4> to the adjacent tubes. The feedwater in this case enters in an air-space entrapped by a bell-shaped baffle D<10>. The generator shown in Figs. 7 and 8 is heated by the hot gases from an internal furnace E'. After passing through the flue tube E to the chamber E<2>, the hot gases return to the front of boiler through the shorter limbs E<3> of the U-tubes shown, the other limbs E<4> of which terminate in the uptake E<5>. Part of the combustion products may be returned to the furnace by means of the inductive action of a steam jet. Fig. 9 shows a vertical boiler with an internal combustion chamber F, which communicates by tubular coils F<1> with the uptake. In a modification, Fig. 10, of the U-tubes shown in Fig. 6, both ends of the tubes are closed, and the inlet and outlet conduits G', G<2> are set obliquely, as shown.
