G. H-ILBIRT. sTAM BUILBR.
No. 349,159. Patented sept. 14,1886.
* UNITED f STATES y PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAVE HILBIRT, OF BUFFALO, NEWT' YORK.
STEAM-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,159, dated September 14, 1886.
Application tiled June 30,1886. Serial No. 206,687. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it knownthatl, GUs'rAvE HILEIRT, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of NewYork, have invented new' and useful Improvements in Steam- Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of steamboilers which comprise a cylindrical shell, a fire-box, iiues extending from the fire-box to the smoke-box, and a smoke-stack mounted on the smoke-box.
The object of the invention is to increase the heating-surface of the boiler, and to prevent the injurious effects of the direct admission of the feed-water to the shell-such as the deposit of sediment on the iiues and the loosening of the iiues in the flue-sheets.
My invention consists, to that end, of the improvements, which will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section of a steam-boiler provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a cross-section in` line x x, Fig. 1.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in both iigures.
A represents the cylindrical shell of the boiler; B, the fire-box, C, the smoke-box; D, the iiues extending from the nre-box to the smokebox, and E the smoke-stack.
The smoke-box C is provided with a cylindrical wall, d, arranged Within the front portion of the shell A and concentric therewith, so as to leave an annular wafer and steam space, d', between the smoke-box and the shell. The rear edge of the cylindrical wall d of the smoke-box is riveted to a flange, f, formed on the front flue-sheet, F. The front edge of the cylindrical wall d is provided with a flange, g, by which it is secured to the front portion of the shell A. The cylindrical wall (l is connected with the surrounding portion of the shell by stay-bolts h.
I is an opening formed in the upper portion of the cylindrical wall d, and communicating with the lower end ofthe smoke-stack E. The opening I is surrounded by a iiaiige,j,-fo11ned on the cylindrical wall d, and secured to the upper portion of the shell A, around the opening in the same, upon which the smokestack is mounted.
J represents the door, hinged `to the front side of the smoke-box in the usual manner.
K represents the feed-water pipes, connected with the shell A on both sides of the smokebox O and communicating with the annular space d. The pipes K are provided with the usual check-valves, k. L represents 'a blowoff pipe secured to the shell A below the sm okeboX, and provided with a stop-cock, Z.
The water and steam space cl, which surrounds the smoke-box, increases the heating surface of the boiler and utilizes the waste heat of the gases and hot cinders passing through or contained in the smoke-box. The feedwater entering this annular space deposits the sediment in the same. The sediment is thereby prevented from accumulating on the fines, and the latter are preserved in good working condition. The feed-water becomes heated in the annular space d before it comes in contact with the iiues, and the latter are thereby prevented from becoming chilled, which would cause the iiues to leak in the flue-sheets. rlhe sediment which is deposited in the annular space d can be readily blown off from time to time by the pipe L.
I claim as my invention- The combination, with the shell A and iiues D, of a smoke-box, C, arranged within the shell and separated therefrom by an annular space, d@ a smoke-stack, E, communicating with the top of the smoke-box, and a feed-water pipe communicating with the annular space d, substantially as set forth.
Witness my hand this 5th day of June, 1886.
GUST. HILBIRT.
JNO. J. BONNER, OsoAR SCHAUB.
