SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 1\l'o. 730,177, dated June 2,1903. Application filed January 30, 1903- Serial No. l4=1.170. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be itknown that I, FRANK O. TRAUER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Heizer, in the county of Barton and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Feed-Water Heaters, of which the follow ing is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in feed-water heaters for steam-boilers, and per tains more particularly to the class used on locomotives.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described in which the heat, smoke, and gases passing through the smoke-box and the smoke-stack are more effectively utilized in thoroughly heating the feed-water before it is fed into the boiler, and thus allowing a greater steam-pressu re to be retained in the boiler with the least possible amount of fuel.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of this character which does not interfere in the least with the cleaning of the fire-box and Hues and at the same time giving a greater heating-surface than has heretofore been accomplished. a
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of the forward portion of a loco motive with my device attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 4is a-vertical transverse sectional view. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of'the head of the smoke- 'box carrying myimproved heating-chamber.
Referring now to the drawings, A represents the ordinary tubular boilers used on 10- comotives or any tubular boilers in which the forward end is provided with a smoke-box B, through which the smoke and gases pass from the furnace to the smoke-stack. Extending in the usual manner from the upper outer portion of said smoke-box is the smoke-stack C. Surrounding said smoke-stack and resting upon the upper portionot' the said smokebox adjacent thereto is a tank or receptacle D, which may be securedthereto in any desired manner, and thus it will be readily seen that said tank receives the heat directly from the gases and smoke as they pass into the smoke- I box and out through the smoke-stack. The front end of the smoke-box is entirely open, and fitting over said open front end is a heater-plate E, which is provided with an outwardly-extending flange e, which fits on the outside of the smoke-box, but is not secured thereto in any way. Centrally carried by the saidvheater-plate E is a swinging door E, which gives access to the smoke-box for the purpose of cleaning the same and also for the purpose of cleaning the tines. Carried by the heater-plate E and surrounding the door E carried thereby is an inwardly-extending circular chamber F.- The outer wall f of said chamber is parallel with and a short distance from the shell of the smoke-box, thus leaving a space surrounding the outer portion thereof, and thus it will be readily seen that the heated smoke and gases come in contact with both the inner and outer walls of said chamber or tank F. The inner wall f of the chamber F starts at the opening covered by the door E and gradually tapers outwardly toward the wallf until it almost comes to a point. By this construction it will be readily seen that the tapering inner wall leaves the flues entirely free and at the same time gives ready access thereto through the door E, whereby they may be readily cleaned without removing any portion of my improved heater.
The outerwall of the tank F is provided with outwardly-extending lugs or projections f which are adapted to engage the inner portion of the shell of the smoke-box, and thus steadying the tank against any lateral movement.- The shell of the smoke-box is provided with a series of set-screws G, which pass therethrongh and are adapted to engageand firmly hold the tank and heater-plate against any longitudinal movement, and thus the tank cannot be removed accidentally.
Extending from the cab of the engine to the side of the tank D is a supply-pipe H, which hasconnected thereto any desired means for forcing the watertherethrough. The means by which the water is forced therethrough is most commonly worked by the running of the engine, although other means might be used. Extending from the forward side of the tank D is a pipe I, which has its lower end extending through the upper portion of the heater-plate E and in communication with the tank F. Connected to the side of the tank F is a pipe J, which extends along the side of the boiler and enters the same, and thus it will be readily seen that the water passing through the pipe necessarily has to pass through the tanks D and F, and thus it will be readily seen that the water becomes very hot before it passes through the pipe I to the boiler.
The pipe H is provided with a check-valve h, which prevents any back pressure from the tank D to the pumping member, by means of which the water is forced to said tank, and the pipe I is also provided with a check-valve j, which prevents any back pressure from the steam-boiler to the tank F.
The pipe I and the pipe J have detachable connections, and thus it will be readily seen that by releasing the set-screws G and uncoupling said pipes the entire heater-plate and tank F can be removed for the purpose of cleaning, or more especially for the purpose of repairing the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a boiler having at one end a smoke-box, of a feed-Water heater comprising a removable plate closing the end of said smoke-box and a circular tank carried by the said plate.
2. The combination with a boiler having at one end a smoke-box, of a feed-water heater comprising a removable plate closing the end of said smoke-box, and having a central door therein, and a circular tank rigidly secured to the said plate and surrounding said door within the smoke-box and spaced a distance from the outer shell of the smoke-box.
3. The combination with a boiler having at one end a smoke-box, of a feed-water heater com prisinga removable plate closing the ends of said smoke-box and having a central door therein, a circular tank rigidly secured to the said plate and surrounding said door Within the smoke box and outwardly extending members carried by the outer circumference of said tank and adapted to engage the shell of said smoke-box.
4. The combination with a boiler having at one end a smoke-box and an upwardly-extending smoke-stack, of a feed-water heater comprising a tank surrounding said smoke stack and resting upon the smoke-box, a plate closing the end of said smoke-box, a ringshaped tank carried by said plate within the smoke-box, a pipe connecting said tanks, a supply-pipe connected to said upper tank and a discharge-pipe connecting said ring-shaped tank to the boiler.
5. The combination with a boiler having at one end a smoke-box, of a feed-water heater comprising a plate covering the end of said smoke-box, and having a central circulardoor therein, a tank rigidly carried by said plate surrounding the door and spaced from said smoke-box, outwardly-extendinglugs carried by said tank and engaging said smoke-box, and inwardly-extending set-screws carried by the said smoke-box and engaging the said tank.
6. The combination with a boiler having at one end a smoke-box, of a feed-water heater comprising a removable plate covering the end of said smoke-box, an inwardly-extending tank rigidly carried by said plate and surrounding said door and having a straight outer wall parallel with the smoke-box, lugs carried by said tank and engaging the smokebox, and said tank having an outwardly-extending oblique inner Wall.
7. The combination with a boiler having at one end a smoke-box, of a removable tank therein and set-screws carried by said smokebox and engaging said tank.
8. The combination with a boiler having at one end a smoke-box, of a feed-water heater comprising a removable plate covering the end of said smoke-box and having a central door therein, an inwardly-extending tankrigidly carried by said plate and surrounding said door, and having an outwardly-extending oblique inner wall and a straight outer wall parallel with the smoke-box, lugs carried by the said straight wall and engaging the smoke-box and set-screws carried by the smoke-box and engaging the straight parallel Wall of the tank.
9. The combination with a boiler having at one end a smoke-box and an upwardly-extending smokestack, of a feed-water heater comprising a tank surrounding said smokestack and resting upon the smoke-box, a plate closing the end of said smoke-box, a ringshaped tank carried by said plate within the smoke-box, lugs carried by said tank and engaging the smoke-box, a pipe connecting said tanks, a supply-pipe connected to said upper tank and a discharge-pipe connecting said ring-shaped tank to the boiler.
10. The combination with a boiler having at one end a smoke-box, and an upwardlyextending smoke-stack, of a feed-water heater comprising a tank surrounding said smokestack and resting upon the smoke-box, a removable plate closing the end of said smokebox, a ring-shaped tank carried by said plate within the smoke-box, lugs carried by the tank and engaging the smoke-box, set-screws passing through the smoke-box and engaging said tank, a pipe connecting said tanks, at supply-pipe connected to said upper tank, and a discharge-pipe connecting said ringshaped tank to the boiler.
