' PATENT OFFICE.
ARNOLD J. SOHEVERS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
' STEAM-BOILER CLEANER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of east mat No. 768,152, dated August 23, 1904.
Application filed May 16, 1903.
To all whom it may concern.-
' Be it known that I, ARNOLD J. SOI-IEVERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county'of Oook, State of Illinois, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Steam-Boiler Cleaners; and I hereby,
declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective in full line of de-; vices embodying my invention and in dotted for use in connection with steam-boilers for preventing the adherence of sediment, mud, &c., to the boiler-sheets and for stirring up or disturbing any deposit thereof at the time that the boiler-water is drawn or blown ofl for the removal of sediment, mud, &c.; and to this end it consists, generally stated, in a system of perforated pipes arranged with relation to the fire-box, water-legs, and boiler-fines and connected with a source offluid-pressure, substantially as will hereinafter more fully ap-.
pear, whereby the usual points of deposit within the boiler may be swept by jets of fluid under pressure to displace the sediment therefrom and cause it to mingle with the boilerwater. l
I will now proceed to describe my invention more fully, so that others skilled in the art to which it appertains may apply the same.
In the drawings, A indicates the fire-box portion of a locomotive boiler, having the usual water-legs a a inclosing the fire-box.
B indicates the cylindrical portion or boiler proper, through which pass the fire-tubes b 5, leading from the fire-box to the smoke-box, and O indicates the steam-dome, all of which may .be of the usual or any approved construction, and the boiler-section B may be provided with the usual mud-drumM and blow-off cocks.
1 indicates the pressure or induction pipe connected with any suitable source of fluid- Serial N5. 157,390. (No model.)
pressure and entering the boiler through the back sheet at a point above the crown-sheet of the fire-box, at which point it is provided with a suitable valve 2 for cutting off or admitting the fluid-pressure to the system within the .boiler. a
3 indicates the first section of pipe within the boiler, which is the crown-sheet section and is located centrally over and extends the length of the crown-sheet of the fire-box and is perforated on its under side, so as to direct divergent jets against the top of thefire-box crown-sheet, the current established thereby being outward toward the water legs a a, formed by the side sheets of the inner and outer boiler-shell. 1
4 4 indicate vertical pipes arranged within the water-legs of the boiler about the middle i of the fire-box and connected at their upper ends by a four-way coupling or otherwise with the induction-pipe 3 and at .their lower ends with the horizontally-disposed loop-pipe 5, which encircles the fire-box near the bottom of the water-legs a a. The pipes 4: 4 are so perforated laterally as to deliver jets against the inner and outer sheets of the sidewalls of the boiler, while the waterrleg loop or section of piping 5 is perforated on its under side like section 3 to deliver downwardly-diverging' jets toward the angles formed between the side walls and bottom of the water-legs.
6 indicates a vertical pipe (or riser) arranged in the water-space between the frontsheet or waist and the shell of the fire-box, which pipe is connected at its lower end with the looppipe 5, which encircles the fire-box, and at its upper end with the cylinder loop-pipe 7, which extends'forward toward the mud-drum in the cylinder-section B of the boiler and is arranged below the fire-tubes 6 6.
The vertical pipe 6 or riser is perforated laterally, so that its jetsmay sweep both.
shells of the water-chamber in which it is located, and the cylinder-loop 7 is perforated on.
its under side, as in the case of sections 3 and 5, where the intent is to disturb the sediment deposited on the horizontal surfaces which lie beneath.
I prefer to use steam from any suitable source as the fluid-pressure for, stirring up the mud and sediment within the boiler at the time of the blow-off; but if air or water jets are desired the induction-pipe 1 may be eonnected with a suitable source of air or liquid under pressure.
The system of perforated pipes and their arrangement with relation to the boiler and its lire-box being substantially such as hereinbefore set forth, whenever the boiler is to be blown off the blow-off cock is first opened, after which the valve 2 will be turned to admit the fluid-pressure from pipe 1 to pipe 3 over the crown-sheet of the fire-box, whence it will pass by pipes 4t 4, water-leg loop 5, and vertical pipe 6 to cylinder-loop 7, escaping throughout its course in diverging jets, which forcibly impinge on the crown-sheet of the firebox, the side walls and bottom of the waterlegs of the boiler, and the bottom of the boiler between the fire-box and the mud-drum, stirring up the sediment, which is caught and carried toward the mud-drum M or blow-off cocks in the boiler-water current which has been thus induced.
Where water-jets areemployed and the pipe 1 is connected with some source of liquid under pressure, as hereinbefore noted, the blowofl' cock Wlll be opened, as before mentioned,
and all steam allowed to escape from the boiler, so that the boiler shall be entirely free of steam before the washing out is attempted.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a steam-boiler having a mud-drum or blow-off cock, a boilercleaner comprising a system of connected piping arranged to inclose the fire-box and extending toward the mud-drum of blow-off coek, said pipe being perforated to deliver divergent jets upon the crown-sheet and side Walls of the fire-box, and means independent of the boiler for inducing fluid-pressure within said system of piping, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. In combination with a steam-boiler having a mud-drum or blow-off cock, a system of connected piping arranged to inclose the the box and comprising a crown-sheet pipe and water-leg loop both of which are perforated on their under sides to deliver downwardlydivergent jets, and means indepemlent of the boiler for inducing fluid-pressure within said system of piping, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
3. In combination with a steam-boiler having a mud-drum or blow-off cock, a system of connected piping arranged to inclose the lirebox and comprising a crown-sheet pipe perforated on its under side to deliver outwardly and downwardly divergent jets, a water-leg loop perforated on its under side to deliver outwardly and downwardly divergent jets, and lateral pipes which connect the crown-sheet pipe and water-leg loop, said lateral pipes perforated to deliver laterally-divergent jets, and means independent of the boiler for inducing fluid-pressure within said system of piping, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
4. In combination with a steam-boiler having a mud-drum or blow-off cock, a system of connected piping comprising a crown sheet pipe perforated on its under side to deliver outwardly and downwardly divergent jets, a water-leg loop perforated on its under side to deliver outwardly and downwardly divergent jets, lateral pipes which connect the crownsheet pipe and water-leg loop perforated to deliver laterally-divergent jets, said crownsheet pipe, water-leg loop and lateral pipes arranged to inc-lose the lire-box, a cylinderloop perforated on its under side to deliver divergent jets, a riser-pipe which connects the water-leg loop and the cylinder-loop, and means independent of the boiler for inducing fluid-pressure within said system of piping, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 14th day of May, 1908.
ARNOLD J. SUHEVERS.
