SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,958, dated December 10,1889.
v Application led May 13, 1889. Serial No. 310,659. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN SHARKEY, of lVinnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Steam- Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved construction of locomotive-boiler which shall economize in the use of fuel, and which invention shall be of such a nature as to permit old boilers to be readily changed so as to permit them to make available the advantages of my invention.
Figure 1 is a vertical central longitudinal section of my improved boiler. Fig. 2 is a rear end view, 'one-half being in section; and Fig. 3 is a front end view partly broken open.
A is the boiler proper.
B is the nre-box; O, the main iues leading from the {ire-box into the front smoke-box D.
E are the return iiues or tubes, two and a half inches in diameter, which extend from the front smoke-box D to the rear smokebox F.
I is a cylindrical shell, forming a steam- Vdrum that extends horizontally along the entire length of boiler A, and is supported on top of the sane and connected thereto by thimbles T. G is a chimney-flue, which connects the front smoke-box FA with the smoke-stack. This chimney-flue extends centrally through the steam-drum I, leaving about three and a half inches of steam-space between it and its shell I.
J is a throttle-valve, which is located on the top of drum or shell I at its front end, so as to insure dry steam. This throttle-valve is connected to branched steam-pipes K K, which descend upon the outside of the shell I-one upon each side of the same-and enter the smoke-box D, Where they connect with the steam-chest for carrying steam to the cylinders.
M is the steam-exhaust pipe, which leads up from the steam-chest at the bottom of the smoke-box and opens directly into the smokestack I-I. This exhaust-pipe has a branch M2, leading horizontally to the front and opening into the end of the horizontal chimney-flue G. A three-Way cock or valve N is placed at the junction of the branch pipe M2 with main exhaust M, whereby the exhaust may be directed immediately to the smokestack or into the front end of the chimney-fine.
O is a man-hole placed in the outside shell of boiler A for cleaning and repairing the boiler. Y
H aving thus described my invention, what I claim as new isl. The combination, with the boiler A, having main lines C, return-nues E, and smokeboxes D and F at front and rear, of a cylindrical shell I, extending horizontally the full length along the top of boiler A and connected to it by thimbles, and the horizontal chimney-flue G, connecting with the smoke-box F in front and the smoke-stack in the rear, and extending horizontally through the center of the shell I, substantially as andfor the purpose described.
2. The combination, with boiler A,ha\'ing main flues C, return-flues- E, and smokeboxes D and F at front and rear, of the horizontal cylindrical shell I, arranged in top of boiler A and connected to it by thimbles, the chimney-Hue G, extending centrally through the shell and connecting the front drum and smoke-stack, the exhaust pipe M, terminating in the smoke-stack, and the branch M2 of the exhaust-pipe extending from. the latter to the front end of the l the full length of the boiler A on top of the y same and connected to it by thimbles, the
chimney-flue G, arranged within the shell I and connecting the front smoke-box and the smoke-stack, the throttle-valve J, mounted on top of the front end of the shell I and communicating with it, and the two pipes K K, extending from the throttle-valve outside of shell I down into the smoke-box for connection with the steam-chest, substantially as described.
April 20, 1889.
