To MZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES J. BUSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Generators, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in steam generators; and the primary object thereof is to provide improved circulation in an ordinary boiler and to prevent incrustation of the shell of the boiler and to provide a positive circulation of the water through the same and also to provide means whereby water may be more quickly heated and steam more quickly and rapidly generated than under ordinary circumstances; and with these and other objects in View the invention consists in animproved water-heater, water-circulator, and steam-generator for steam-boilers, constructed and applied as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is an improvement on the construction described and claimed in United States Letters Patent No. 447,866, granted to me March l0, 1891, and is fully described in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters, said drawing being a perspective view of an ordinary boiler provided with my imprevement.
In the drawing forming part of this speciication I have shown at a an ordinary tubularboiler, which is mounted in the usual manner in a furnace comprising side walls b, a rear end wall c, and a front end wall d, and in the front end portion of which is a firechamber e, beneath which is a grate f, beneath which is the usual ash-pit g, and rearwardly of the grate fand forming the rear wall of the fire-chamber and ash-pit and a partial support Vfor the grate is a transverse brid ge-wall h, the top of which is a predetermined distance above the grate f. The front wall d is also provided with the usual doors t' and j, which afford access to the fire-box and ash-pit.
In the practice of my invention I provide a supplemental water-heater, water-circula- Serial No. 150,121. (No model.)
tol', and steam-generator, in the construction of which I employ a transverse water-box 7e, located beneath and preferably slightly in front of the front end of the boiler, and this water-box is connected with the front end of the boiler, near the top thereof, by means of pipes 7:2. lonnected with the water -box 7.; and extendingbackwardly beneath the boiler are a plurality of pipes k3, and arranged transversely beneath the boiler and resting on the bridge-Wall h is a water-drum 7a4, with which the pipes 7e3 are connected by means of elbowcouplings rf. rlhe pipes 7c3 are arranged in the same horizontal plane, and the rear ends thereof by means of the couplings 75 are curved downwardly, and connection between the said pipes and the water-drum 7a4 is made in the top portion of said drum. Connected to the rear side of the water-dr um 7a4 and preferably centrally thereof is a pipe it, the rear end of which is connected with theverticallyarranged pipe 7x7, the upper end of which is connected directly with. the bottom of the boiler, at or near the rear end thereof, and the lower end of this pipe is connected with a muddrum its. One or both ends of the water-drum 7a4 is provided with a blow-off m, and the muddrum its is also provided with a blow-off a and with a hand-hole o, closed in the usual or any desired manner.
In the drawing forming part of this specification one of the side walls of the furnace is removed; but it will be understood that the blow-off m of the water-drum 7a4 is provided with a pipe which is carried through the side wall of the furnace, and both ends of said drum may be similarly provided,and the blowoff n of the mud-drum 7e is also provided in practice with a pipe which is carried through the wall of the furnace. As thus constructed it will be seen that the Water-drum h4, which forms a part of the supplemental heater, cir- Vculator, and steam-generator, also forms a part of the rear wall of the hre-chamber e, and the flames and hot gases from the said fire-chamber strike aginst this water-drum ICO . to the method of connecting the separate parts of my improvement, and the box k, the pipes 7a2 and 7c3, the drum 7a4, the pipe 766, and the pipe k7 may be connected in any desired manner, and instead of using but one pipe between the drum 7a4 and the pipe 707 a plurality of such pipes may be employed, and these parts may all be so connected as to be capable of being separated when desired for the purpose of cleaning, repairing, &c. By means of this construction there is a positive, direct, continuous, and unobstructed flow of water in one direction, the water being taken from the lower. rear part of the boiler and returned thereto at the upper front portion thereof, and this circulation is such as to prevent a deposition of dirt, sediment, or similar substances on the inner surface of the boiler and also lon the inner surfaces of the parts of the supplemental heater, Watercir culator, and steam generator, and it will be apparent that by reason of the construction herein described steam may be quickly generated within the boiler and a high pressure of steam secured at a comparatively slight expense of fuel.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A water-heater, circulator, and steamgenerator for steam-boilers, comprising a transverse waterdrum arranged rearwardly of the fire-chamber of the furnace and supported on the bridge-wall of the furnace, a
`water-box placed transversely of and beneath the front end of the boiler, horizontally-arranged pipes connected With said Water-box and with the top portion of said drum, other pipes connecting the water-box with the front end of the boiler near the top thereof, a vertically-arranged pipe connected with the bottom portion of a boiler at the rear end thereof and in communication With said Water-drum, and a mud-drum connected with the lower end of the vertically-arranged pipe, substantially as shown and described.
2. A Water-heater, circulator, and steamgenerator for steamboilers, comprising a transverse water-drum arranged rearwardly of the fire-chamber of the furnace and supported on the bridge-wall of the furnace, a water-box placed transversely of and beneath the front end of the boiler, horizontally-arranged pipes connected with said water-box and with the top portion of said drum, other pipes connecting the water-box with the front end of the boiler near the top thereof, a vertically-arranged pipe connected with the bottom portion of a boiler at the rear end thereof and in communication With said water-drum, and a mud-drum connected with the lower end of the vertically-arranged pipe, said muddrum being also provided with a hand-hole and blow-off, substantially as shown and described.
3. A water-heater, circulator, and steamgenerator for steam boilers, comprising a transverse water-drum arrangedrearwardly of the fire-chamber of the furnace and supported on the bridge -wall of the furnace, a water-box placed transversely of and beneath the front end of the boiler, horizontally-arranged pipes connected with said water-box and with the top portion of said drum, other pipes connecting the water-boX with the front end of the boiler near the top thereof, a vertically-arranged pipe connected with the bottom portion of a boiler at the rear end thereof and in communication with said Water-drum, and a mud-drum connected with the lower end of the vertically-arranged pipe, said muddrum being also provided with a hand-hole and blow-off, and the water-drum being also provided With a blow -off, substantially as shown and described.
