, 1 WATER TUBBBOILEIR. No. 412,438. Patented Oct.- 8, 1 889.
. to water-tube boilers.
UNITED v STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD WATKINS-AND J OHN'DIOKSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WATER-TUBEBOILER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters 'Patent No. 412,438,,dated October 8, 1889. Application filed July 6, 1889- Serial No. 316,715. (N model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, RICHARD WA'rKms and JOHN DIOKSON, citizens of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county'of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Tube Boilers; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates generally to stationary land and marine boilers, but particularly We will first describe the invention in connection with the drawings, and then point it out in the claim.
Figure 1 of the drawings is an elevation in longitudinal section; Fig. 2, a vertical crosssection, and Fig. 3 a detail view showing the corrugation of the boiler metal.
In the drawings, A represents the boiler as an entirety; B, the return fire-tubes; O O, the horizontal fire-fines; c, the water-tubes running from the front head a to the back head a, through said flues, the heads an, being tapped to receive the brass plugs D, which are opposite the tube-end holes where they open into the water-space.
E represents the furnace-chamber, divided by a water-leg or partition E, and provided with the usual grate-bars e, fire-doors c, and bridge-wall F in each division. In addition to the usual bridge-wall F,'we make another wall F, extending down from the upper part of each flue 0, just where the water-tubes 0 enter the chamber G, in which the products of combustion rise to enter the return-tubes B, and thence pass outthrough the uptake H. The function of the wall F is to deflect the products of combustion downwardly. and thus cause them to dwell longer among the watertubes and part with more of their heat.
The watenspace I surrounds the fire-place of the boiler and ext ends into the legs h h and partition-leg E.
r J K L are man-holes to allow access to the interior of theboiler for the purpose of cleaning it out, and M a steam-drum connecting with the steam-space of the boiler by means of the necks m.
lVe are well acquainted with the boiler described in Patent No. 348,315, granted to Burrows, August 31, 1886; but it has only one large furnace and that one in the large flue. Hence the water-tubes are crowded down into the fuel, while the fire comes into such close contact. with the water-tubes that the water is liable to be driven out and the tubes to be burned. There is also found to be insufficient room in this boiler for fire thick-.
ness and for grate-surface. In order to remove these objections, we have made two independent furnaces, each with its own fire-door, so that one may be cleaned out 'while the other is in full operation, thus preventing the admission of cold air to the heating-surface of all the tubes. Our construction also avoids the crowding of thewater-tubes down into the fire, so that the water in our tubes is not liable to be driven out and the tubes to be burned. In order to render unnecessary the usual bracing against collapsing pressure,we corrugate the lines 0, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, thereby also increasing the heatingsurface.
What we claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
A steam-boiler having the lower part divided by a water-leg partition into two compartments, and having in each of these compartments a separate furnace,a separate fireflue, and the water-tube c, the latter running through said lines from head a to head a, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
RICHARD WATKINS. JOHN DICKSON. Witnesses:
