RICHARD GREGG, OF OSWEGO, NEW YORK.
STEAM-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 624,791, dated May 9, 1899.
Application filed December 23, 1898. Serial N0.,'700,092. (110 model.)
To to whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD GREGG, of Oswego, in the county of Oswego, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Steam-Boilers, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to boilers, and more particularly to those of the locomotive type.
My'object is to produce a locomotive-boiler (or other type, if desired) which is provided with water-fines, a fire-wall carried by them, a shell inclosing the water-fines and part of said fire-wall and creating a passage for the smoke or products of combustion from the 9 and in such manner as to create a channel, 1
fire-pot through, between, and around said fines and between them and said casing forward into a smoke-chamber in the front ofthe boiler, and thence to the rear end and to the stack opening or pipe through smoke-fines immersed in water, suitable water-legs being also provided to aid in creating and main taining free circulation of the water both through the water dues and around the smoke-fines. a
It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section, partly in elevation, of my boiler.- Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section on line a: 00 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a like View on line y y in Fig. 1.
The boiler comprises a suitable outer shell, a parallel inner wall 2, creating a water-leg 8 and having a fire-box 4, grate 5, ash-pit 6, with suitable openings 7 and 8 for the fuel and ash=pit doors. Between the fire-box and a point near the front end the water-leg wall is carried overin the form of a cylinder at, the end 9 of which constitutes a flue-sheet in which the front ends of the water-fines 10 are set, their rear ends being set in the Water-leg wall 2, thus connecting the water-leg to the water-chamber 11 in the front end of the boiler and between it and the flue-sheet 9. The upper row of said water flues is shown as set upon an arc and as furnishing a support for the fire wall or partition 12, which extends forward from the rear end to a point more or less closely adjacent to the flue-sheet conduit, or reverse passage 13 for the smoke, which passes from the fire-box forward and upward between the water-fines, to be conducted back into the smoke-chamber 14 and thence forward through the smoke-fines 15 to the stack, which is not shown. These smoke-fines are set in the sheet 16 at the front end of this smoke-chamber and in the fluesheet 17 at the front end of theboiler. A suitable manhole, cover, and fastening 18 is also provided. The smoke-fines are all belowthe water-level.
It will be seen that the water will circulate freely through the water-legs, the water-fines, and the water-chamber and around the smoke* flues that the smoke passes from the fire-box up around the flues until stopped by the firewall, thence forward to the front end of said wall and to the flue-sheet 9, thence rearward through a more or less constricted passage into the smoke-chamber, and thence forward again to the stack, in this manner the waterfiues being exposed to the direct action of the heat and the smoke-fines being heated to exert more or less efiect upon the water around them; that the flues are in two independent sets, the one set the water-finesreceiving the direct impact of the heat exteriorly and the others the direct impact interiorly, the water-fines being for part of their length inclosed in a tubular smoke-conduit and part of their length partially inolosed in a fire-Wall, which also deflects the smoke and-causes it to take a circuitous course.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to seizure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. In a steam-boiler an outer shell, a firebox, a water-leg around it, an inner smokeshell forward of the fire-box, water-tubes set in the closed front end of said smoke-shell, extending through the-fire-box and connected to the water-leg, the top row of said tubes being set upon an arc, a fire-wall across said shell and supported by said row of fiues and extending forward part way through said inner shell creating a fire-flue between said partition and said inner shell conducting the products of combustion to a smoke=chamber above the fire-box, and a set of fire-tubes extending thence forward to the front end of the boiler to carry off the smoke.
2. In a boiler, an outer shell, a fire-box, an inner smoke-shell extending forward from the fire-box, a row of water-tubes set upon an arc and extending through the fire-box and said shell, a fire-wall partition extending through the fire-box above said water-tubes and into said shell, a reverse-flue between .said shell and said fire-wall opening into a smoke-chamber above said Wall, and a set of
