Abstract

4727. Garsed, J. L. Feb. 27. Disinfecting.-Cabinets and receptacles, for the purpose of disinfecting pencils and other articles used in schools, handkerchiefs, hairbrushes, letters, &c., have drawers or trays of wire or other openwork or gauze for retaining the articles and a space at the bottom to contain the disinfecting or antiseptic medium. The recesses in the cabinet in which the drawers slide are closed at the mouth by weighted hinged flaps, which fall when the drawer is withdrawn. The box, desk, or cabinet, in which the articles are stored when not in use, is provided with a series of drawers or trays 2, Fig. 3, made of wire or other open-work or gauze with a solid front 3 made larger than the open-work portion and adapted to fit closely within the recesses in the framework of the cabinet. Inside the lower part of the cabinet is placed a disinfectant or antiseptic fumigating-medium, the runners for the drawers being perforated or made of short lengths or narrow strips with longitudinal slots, or the drawers are narrower and shorter than the recesses which retain them, so as to allow of the free circulation of the disinfectant. The trays are rounded at the ends, so as to facilitate the insertion of the drawers into their respective recesses, which are covered over when the drawer is withdrawn by a hinged flap 7 weighted at 7<A> so as to fall and close the mouth of the recess. Wires secured upon the flaps ensure them from damage when pushed aside by an ingoing drawer. When constructed in the form of a simple box, as shown in Fig. 6, the wirework trays may be divided into divisions which are held some distance above the bottom of the box, so as to leave a space in which the disinfecting-medium is placed. The box is provided with a hinged lid, which rests upon rubber or felt packing to prevent escape of the disinfect. The apparatus may constitute an independent article, or it may form part of a desk or other article of furniture.
