Abstract

26,165. Truss, T. F. J. Dec. 15.. Exchaust-silencers.-The exhaust gases of an internal-combustion engine are silenced by causing interference of the sound waves, and vapour is condensed by a water jacket or by water spray. In the simplest form of silencer, for motor-cycles &c., the exhaust pipe is bifurcated and united again. Fig. 2 shows one form in which the gases divide into the tubes b, c and are mixed again by the nozzles e, f. The silencer is fitted with a perforated cap g and a conical deflector h. Fig. 3 shows a silencer in which the branch pipes are divided and subdivided in a more complicated manner. A silencer may be fitted with cones or cowls l or m, Fig. 6, for inducing a current of air with which the gases mix, or in the case of a marine motor the gases may induce a current of water through a pipe n. The silencers may be enclosed in water jackets which condense the vapours and deaden vibration.
