Abstract

9969. Gibson, H. C. Dec. 30, 1908, [Convention date]. Exhaust - silencers are formed with spiral or helical passages for the exhaust, the size of the passage gradually varying. As shown in Fig. II, a special deflector C is wound around a cone band placed in a conical casing B, which in turn is inside a casing G with apertures J to the atmosphere. The inlet A to the exhaust is at the large end of the cone, a spiral deflector E placed towards the apertures J being attached at the smaller end. The device as a whole is held together by a through-bolt F, which carries attachment nuts k to fix the silencer on the car &c. In modifications, the outer casing G and the inner cone b may be omitted.
