Abstract

16,736. Shepherd, T. Aug. 18. Gas or explosivevapour engines, carburetting in. A carburettor of the float-feed type is made of several separate parts of wrought or drawn, instead of cast, metal, and may be fitted with a jacketed heater. It may be used with engines of various sizes, and in it paraffin may be used without the aid of petrol for starting. The tubes A, H, Fig. 1, are screwed into the covers B, D so as to form an annular chamber J which contains the oil fuel, admitted by a spring-loaded valve K under the control of a float I. The oil is fed to the nozzle L', controlled by the valve M with its screw N, and is carried to the cylinder by air admitted through an iris diaphragm O and a gauze screen which excludes dust. Instead of the throttle valve S and diaphragm O, a collapsible cone, one form of which is shown in Fig. 9, may be used. This is made of sheet steel or other metal coiled as shown in Fig. 11. The cone is adjusted in size by the slide p<1> carried by the holder p<2>. Two modifications of the carburettor are shown and described in the Specification. In one, the throttle is absent and its place taken by a heater consisting of a ribbed tube surrounded by a jacket heated by the engine cooling-water, or by the exhaust. Under this heater is placed a tray in which paraffin may be burned to generate sufficient heat for starting. In the other form, the iris diaphragm is at the level of the fuel nozzle and is carried by a cylinder which fits the inner tube of the annular oil-fuel chamber. The heater in this case consists of a series of cross-tubes through which the engine exhaust passes, the fuel receiving heat from the outsides of the tubes.
