Abstract

5220. Thomas, P. H. March 28,1904, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901 ]. Vacuum tubes.-The cooling of a mercury or like lamp, especially when it contains a mixture of gases or vapours, is effected by means of an internal tube 6, filled with alcohol, water, ether, or a like substance and opening into an external condensing- chamber 8. This chamber is previously sealed at a definite pressure of the gas contained in it, the object being to maintain the boiling liquid at a predetermined temperature. In another form of the device, a downwardly extending tubular portion of the envelope 1 of the lamp, partly filled by the mercury electrode, has the cooling-tube sealed through its upper end and passing through it into the mercury.
