Brakes.-To enable a brake or a clutch used on a motor road vehicle &c. to be put into or out of action gently, it is made of compound form comprising both the plate and the conical type, the former being engaged first. The driving-part A is first engaged by a plate D, sliding on the non-circular driven shaft B, by releasing the sleeve K, the spring L then pressing the rod G, with a curved end H, against the actuating-levers F. Further pressure of the spring L presses the parts D, A along until the latter engages a conical clutch piece C secured to the shaft B. A spring M facilitates disengagement.
