Abstract

[Published under Section 91 of the Act.] Clutches.-In coaster hubs for cycles &c. employing a doubly-conical clutch nut 8 engaging with a quick-threaded driving-member 7, the drag on the nut is effected by springs 12 arranged in longitudinal grooves thereof and fixed at one end thereto, the springs being arranged to project out of the grooves at the driving-part of the nut and to extend at their free ends 14 into engagement with a conically turned-out portion 15 of the brake block 10. The ends of the springs are held by a cap 13 and the projecting parts 16 bear upon the hub, so that, when the nut has moved into its driving position, the parts 16 are depressed and consequently the ends 14 move inwards clear of the brake block. On free-wheeling, the pressure on the part 16 is relieved and the ends 14 move outwards to bear frictionally on the brake block to ensure the axial motion of the nut when the brake is to be applied. In order that the springing action may occur near the fixed end of the springs, they are preferably stiffened as by the provision of flanges or side edges at the part 17. Spring levers may be substituted for the springs.
