Abstract

20,287. Burchell, E. Oct. 10. Clutches ; brakes.-Relates to a free-wheel clutch for bicycles &c. adapted for back-pedalling, or for applying a brake. The chain or gear wheel 5, loose on the hub 2, carries, on a disc 14 fixed to it, a pivoted block 8. This block is formed with a tooth 12, adapted to engage with a stationary toothed wheel 4, and with a dog having two driving- surfaces 9, 10 adapted to engage with a toothed wheel 3 fixed to the hub. When the wheel 5 is at rest, the block 8, under the influence of the spring 11, assumes a central position, and the wheel 3 is free. When the wheel 5 is driven in either direction, the block is tilted by the engagement of the tooth with the stationary wheel, and the leading end of the dog is depressed into gear with the wheel 3, which is thereby rotated. The dog may, however, be formed so as to drive in one direction only, and it may also be modified to act by friction against a plain wheel. When it is desired to apply a brake by back-pedalling, the wheel 4, instead of being fixed, is allowed to rotate to a certain extent under the control of a spring ; the brake is connected to the wheel, and may also be adapted for hand operation.
