Abstract

852. Ramsey, R. H. Jan. 16. Single-acting engines; driving-gear; valves, distributing.-In the engines shown, the axes of the cylinders are tangential to the circles swept by the crank-pins. The connecting-rods are less than four times the crank radius, and may be-curved to clear the piston and cylinder or they may be slotted. A four-stroke-cycle internal-combustion engine is shown in Fig. 1, and a two-stroke-cycle engine in Fig. 2. The stroke is greater than twice the throw of the crank. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, an auxiliary exhaust port is placed within the excess portion, the primary exhaust being at the closed end of the cylinder. In that shown in Fig. 2, the primary exhaust is within the excess portion, and the crank casing 7 is used as a reservoir, the inlet to the cylinder being shown at 21. In engines having cross-heads, the arrangement is as shown in Fig. 3. The invention is applicable to steam-engines.
