Abstract

598. Powell, W. Jan. 12. Variable-speed gearing.-In a threespeed gear for cycles, the high and low speeds are obtained by transmission through one or other of two trains of epicyclic gearing, while for the normal speed, the drive is transmitted directly from the driving-member to the hub. The mechanism and the hub shell are mounted on ball bearings independently-adjustable from the outside. For the normal speed, projections j<1> upon a rotatable clutch-ring j engage opposite notches h<1> in a ring h upon the hub, so that the chain-wheel a, the slotted driving-sleeve f, and the hub rotate as a whole. On releasing a wire i<4>, a spring k forces a sliding non- rotatable clutch-sleeve i<3> to the left till projections i<5> thereon engage jaws g<6> on the central pinion g<2> of a low-speed epicyclic train through which the hub is now driven. By pulling the sleeve to the extreme right, opposite projections i<6> engaging jaws d<6> hold stationary the central pinion d<2> of a high-speed epicyclic train, so that the hub is turned more rapidly than the chainwheel. The hub shell is mounted on bearings n, n<1>, adjustable by means of a threaded cone e<6>, while the driving-sleeve bearings m, m<1> are adjusted by a cone e<7>. The Provisional Specification states that, instead of the high and low speed clutch-rings being in one piece, as shown, they may be independent and the normal-speed clutch-ring mounted between them.
