Abstract
124,279. Sturmey-Archer Gears, Ltd., and Archer, J. March 21, 1918. Variable-speed gearing.-Three-speed epicyclic gearing for velocipedes of the kind comprising endwise movable planetary gear, such .as that described in Specification 1912/04, has hollow pinion axes in the planet cage engaged by studs on a non-sliding member, which drives the hub through ratchet mechanism for low-speed and allows overrunning on the high and normal speeds. The planet-cage a carries pinions with hollow axes b engaged by studs j on a part f non-slidable on the axle h and with a screw-thread engaging a loose member g which has ratchet teeth g<1> engaging holes in the part f during forward drive, pawls e engaging ratchet teeth k<1> on the hub k for low speed, and a coned extension engaging and operating a brake l during back-pedalling. The planet pinions engage a sun-wheel integral with the fixed axle h and a toothed ring r provided with oppositely acting pawls engaging the driving sleeve c and hub k respectively, the three speeds being obtained as described in the Specification referred to. The brake may be dispensed with, the part f having ratchet teeth engaging with pawls on the hub. A nut m screws on the axle h against a bearing-sleeve n supporting the hub outside the brake, or a conical nut may be employed bearing against a sleeve carrying the female part of the brake cone and supporting the hub within the brake band.
