Abstract

503. Techel, H., and Salaschek, M.. Jan. 10. Gas and like engines, reversing in. The valves, igniters, &c. of a multi-cyclinder engine are worked from a shaft which always runs in the same direction. When the engine is to be reversed, the position of the cams relatively to each other on the cam shaft is changed, the shaft as a whole is turned through an angle which is dependent upon the angle the crank shaft has moved through from a given point at the time of reversing, and the direction of running of the crank and cam shaft is changed by reversing-gear. Fig. 4 shows the invention applied to the admission valves of a three-cylinder, four-stroke cycle engine. The cam shaft is disengaged from the driving-wheel A, say, its parts D', D<2>, D<3> are then disengaged from each other, and the cams are adjusted by spur gearing 2, 3, which is brought into action for the purpose, and the cams are re-engaged. The cam shaft is then adjusted as a whole by a hand wheel H and is engaged with the other driving-wheel B. The application of screw gearing, epicyclic gearing, and helical sleeves for moving the cams relatively to each other is also described.
