Abstract

12,541. Jones, C. E. May 29. Piston and tubular valves having both longitudinal and rotary motion.-In an internalcombustion engine, a ring-valve 2 in the combustion chamber receives reciprocating helical motion and controls either or both the inlet and exhaust ports 5, 6. The valve is worked by an arm 3 projecting through a helical guiding-slot 4 in the cylinder walls. This arm may be provided with adjustable tapered bushings 11. The valve may be a split spring-ring, and the split may be toothed, as shown at 10, Fig. 5, in order to prevent axial displacement of the ends, or it may be helical as at 12, Fig. 4, and work over a tapered adjustable feather 7, Fig. 2, serving as an adjustable guide for the valve, the ends of the split ring being held in place by a dowel 8, which may also serve to limit the closing of the ring. The valve may be formed with ports, the top and bottom edges being suitably inclined to engage guiding-pins or projections on the walls of the combustion chamber.
