Abstract
27,345. Hartridge, W. B. Dec. 15. Tyres, pneumatic &c. felloes or rims; wheels with two or more rims or tyres side by side.-Relates to plural-track wheels in which each track consists of a pneumatic or other elastic segment (or segments) extending partly round the wheel, the segments in the various tracks arranged in 'break-joint' order so that although a continuous tread surface is obtained, the vertical plane of the actual contact surface changes during each revolution of the wheel. In the form shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the elastic tyre segment J, which may be continuous or in sections fitted in suitable shoes, is secured on the wheel by means of a tread composed of hinged metal shoes M adjusted circumferentially by means of eye bolts F<1> passed through lugs G on the rim. In a modification in which the tread may be omitted, the elastic sections are threaded on metal bands capable of circumferential adjustment. In the form in which pneumatic tyre segments are employed, the outer cover of each segment may have embedded securing-wires capable of circumferential adjustment ; or the edges of the cover may be gripped between the rim base and a radiallyadjustable plate ; or, as shown at Fig. 23, in addition to connecting the embedded wires R<1> to adjustable lugs R<7>, each end of the tyre cover is formed with a bead R<x> engaged by a radiallyadjustable lip B<X>. The various air chambers may be inflated separately, or through a common valve, in which case the chambers may be connected by tubes fitted with screw-down valves to isolate a chamber (or chambers) if desired.
