Tyres, pneumatic; felloes or rims.-In the means shown in Figs. 1 and 2 for attaching the tyre to the rim, the thickened edges 23 of the cover 20 are hell in position within the rim 21 by means of a broad metal band 22, the adjustable ends of which are connected to nuts 24 working on the right and left handed screw 25. Either an inner air tube may be used, or the band 22 may be sheathed in rubber, which gives an airtight joint with the edges 23. The ends of the band may, instead of overlapping, abut on a rubber block, or they may be connected by springs 34 to studs 32 which, on inflating the air tube, take into holes in the rim, or they may have slots, through which pass bolts which can be fastened to the rim. In a singletube tyre, the part lying within the rim may be provided with slots through which the bolts or the like on the ends of the band may pass, and a rubber band may be placed between the tyre and the rim. The tube and rim have, in such cases, projections and grooves for preventing the undue expansion of the slots. Fig. 17 shows a form in which the metal band is dispensed with, the inner air tube 31 being inextensible along that part which lies nearest to the rim. In each case where an inner air tube is employed, the outer cover may be airtight, and inflating-valves may be supplied to both the air tube and cover. The outer cover may be lined with a layer of compressed rubber, which is obtained in its compressed condition by moulding the cover inside out and finally reversing it.
