Washing-boards are provided with narrow slots or saw-cuts between the several corrugations; a plain but similarly-slotted one may be hinged to such a board, to assist the rubbing. In one form, shown in Figs. 1, 2, 4, and 6, the slots a<2> extend almost across the width of the board between the corrugations a'. The plain boarding b is inclined to the general plane of the board, as shown in Fig. 4, to form a receptacle for soap. The corrugations may be formed from a single piece of wood or of slightly-separated wood or metal rods of diamond, circular, or other section. Fig. 19 shows a modification in which the rods are of a sinuous form with suitable distance - pieces a' of metal. Fig. 21 shows a form in which two rows of rods are employed and supported if necessary by the metal strips x, fastened at one end to the slot a<6> and at the other to the rod a<12> extending across the board. Fig. 25 illustrates another arrangement, in which two boards are employed with their plain faces adjacent; if desired, only one such board may be used, the plain side being employed for washing collars &c. In Figs. 29 and 30, the plain board a<1*> with the saw-cut slots is shown hinged upon the washing-board by means of the hooks a<16> which can slide on the rod a<17> in the direction of the arrow, or the board may be turned back or entirely removed.
